I therefore apologize if this review is evasive at times, but that is because this game needs to be experienced as freshly as possible. In some circles, the game has acquired a mystique akin to the film Fight Clubin that the unwritten first rule of Doki Doki Literature Club is that you don’t talk about Doki Doki Literature Club. Although Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! ensnared me from that early line to the culmination of multiple playthroughs, I almost don’t want to review it. Specifically, it was the scene in an episode of The Magicians where Penny reluctantly joins a book club and eats a cupcake.
Not only did I find the line itself amusing in its absurdity, but it reminded me of a poignant scene in one of my favorite TV shows. The moment I read this line early on in Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, I was hooked. “And thus, today marks the day I sold my soul for a cupcake.”
